MU100 Voice In-depth Info

Profile
Fumitsugu Ohtaka
Raised in Kyoto where he was born on November 20, 1965, he is affectionately known to his friends as "Tono" (lord).
I have been working with the XG format since the days when it was first being established as a new standard. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the development of XG...my work would not be possible without you.
Background
I would like to begin by discussing some of my personal thoughts about sounds in general. It has been an ongoing goal of mine to simulate accurate and intense sounds. I would like to share my pursuit of this goal through music with you, as well as a few other topics of personal interest.

Session 1 Meet the Sound Programmer

DevZone has asked Mr. Ohtaka about his preferences in sound and music before going into discussions on intangibles about technologies. You will find much easier to follow further sessions after getting know the professional sound programmer.

Q. Currently which synthesizer do you like the best?
Nord Lead(Nord Rack)
I love it...even though it's not a Yamaha. The sound quality is fantastic and the adjustment controls are very sensitive enabling subtle, smooth transitions.

Q. If you (and a stereo) were stuck on a desert island, what three albums would you most like to have with you?
Secret Story/Pat Metheny
Kind of Blue/Miles Davis
Bach: Goldberg Variations by Glenn Gould (the 1981 recording)

All of these are well known titles that all of you have probably heard of before. What all three of these titles have in common is their ability to overwhelm a listener who is preoccupied with technique and interpretations; this music requires the listener to truly let go of those barriers and just listen.

The value of these albums is recognized best by just sitting down and absorbing each one from beginning to end. Whenever I listen through to the end of one of these three albums, I get an unimaginable sense of satisfaction. Of course, I don't listen to them everyday, but I cannot imagine living without them. Listening to these albums motivates me to create musical instruments.

Q. What are some of your favorite CDs that you have purchased recently?
Saturn Returns/Goldie
A Drum'n'Bass' opinion leader. I think that their previous album, Timeless, was better. This one gets kind of tedious after a while. Most likely the result of R. Playford's departure from the group. It sounds to me like they haven't quite gotten over the loss.

Pizzicato Five: Best
This is a compilation of their hits from over the years. I love the vocals of Maki Nomiya...mesmerizing. I also really like Yasuharu Konishi's DJ-like style.

Design and Mistakes/Animals on Wheels
This release is from Ninja Tune. The diversity of this music reminds you of Luke Vibert (Plug, Wgon Crist).

Led Zeppelin Best
The double CD. I won't even bother singing praises for this one since it's a classic. John Bohnam is just great.

I would like to thank some of the good people who have helped me over the years... Mori, Maruyama, Yamazaki, Yamaguchi, Nanbu, Sakurai, Okumiya, Kimura, Yano and the many others at the office and beyond. THANK YOU.
